Understanding Fertility & Age

A woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have — around 1-2 million at birth, dropping to about 300,000-400,000 by puberty. Both the number and quality of eggs decline steadily with age, with a more noticeable acceleration after 35.

Fertility potential is highest in the 20s, begins a gradual decline from the early 30s, drops more noticeably after 35, and declines sharply after 40. AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) blood testing can give a more personalised picture of your ovarian reserve than age alone.

This calculator gives a general, population-average estimate. Only a fertility specialist can assess your individual reproductive health accurately, through tests like AMH, antral follicle count (AFC), and FSH levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age does female fertility start declining? +
Female fertility gradually declines from the early 30s, with a more noticeable drop after 35 and a sharper decline after 40, due to a natural decrease in egg quantity and quality.
What is AMH and why does it matter? +
AMH (Anti-Mullerian Hormone) is a blood marker that reflects your ovarian reserve, i.e. the approximate number of eggs remaining. Higher AMH generally indicates a larger egg reserve, though it doesn't measure egg quality.
Should I consider egg freezing? +
Egg freezing is most effective when done before age 35, as egg quality and quantity are higher at that stage. If you are not planning pregnancy soon but want to preserve fertility options, a consultation with a fertility specialist can help you decide.
Does male fertility also decline with age? +
Yes, though more gradually than female fertility. Sperm quality, motility, and DNA integrity can decline after age 40-45, which is why a fertility evaluation for both partners is recommended when trying to conceive.
